I have been asked to get someone an Apple laptop that can run OS 9. How far back do I have to go to find hardware that supports OS9?

Pre-aluminum powerbooks natively. Anything Ti.

I had an old iBook G3 500MHz that came with OS 9, though I never actually used it on it.

As Biff says, the Ti's.

Also, totally spaced on the iBooks for some reason - all the way up to the G3/900 is OS9 bootable. None of the G4 iBooks can boot OS9.

It's not booting- it's a self-contained installer with sheepshaver and a OS9 image.
It's also not perfect.
