video editing, playing, codecs, ripping, encoding, copying, converting - Avi, Xvid, 3ivX, DivX, DV

edited March 2007 in advice
I've just grabbed InPeace's post from Baseboard (r.i.p.). Couldn't let it die.

This is a collection of links related to playing, converting and editing Avi, Xvid, 3ivX, DivX, DVD, VCD, MPEG, and so on on Mac OS. There's also some PC stuff, most of which has been included because they work with Virtual PC. All descriptions in speech marks are from the makers, not my own.

UPDATE 2 Feb 08
Have updated a few things. Will get around to tiding up the place a bit soon(ish). Will get rid of some of the dead stuff and see if there is anything new and exciting out there. Perhaps even sort out the categories a bit.
Some of the old stuff removed. Still some more to get through but slowly, slowly catchy monkey.

UPDATE 14 April 09
At home sick today so I thought sort this thread out a bit. Ditch some of the old, add some new tasty bits.

Playing

VLC media player 0.9.9
"The VLC Media Player is a multi-platform multimedia player. It can read DVDs, VCDs, MPEG and files." OS X

Seriously, is there anything else out there nearly as good?

    Encoding and Decoding

Converting files on the Mac OS seems to have matured. Now there seems to be the killer app. Handbrake. Bullet proof conversion from DVD to mp4 ripper/converter.

    HandBrake 0.9.3
"HandBrake is no longer limited to DVDs: it will now accept practically any type of video as a source. This massive enhancement was achieved by tapping into the power of libavcodec and libavformat from the FFmpeg project. HandBrake is a GPL'd multi-platform, heavily multithreaded DVD to AVI/MPEG-4 converter." An offshoot of Handbrake, called MediaFork can also be found at Handbrake's site. Requires minimum 10.5 OS X

    VisualHub 1.3
    "VisualHub is now dead RIP."

    MacTheRipper 2.6.6
"MacTheRipper is a DVD extractor for MacOS X. It removes CSS encryption, Macrovision protection, sets the disc's region to '0' for region-free, and has the ability to disable RCE region checking. It does not depend on the drive to retrieve the keys to unlock the DVD, so therefore, it is unnecessary to play the DVD with DVD Player to unlock it, making it easier to backup DVDs from other regions." There is a beta version of 3 available through a small donation on the forum. Can rip some of the newer copy protection. Requires 10.2. OS X

    DVD2oneX 2.3.1
"With this tool you can make movie-only and full disk copies for personal use on a single DVD-Recordable. World's fastest video compression engine. Process a movie to fit on a single recordable in a matter of 15 to 30 minutes (depending on the speed of your computer). Makes movies-only copies. Why waste space and image quality on unnecessary intros, menus and language tracks?
Makes also full disk copies. For those who want to keep those fancy menus and intros."
    Requires 10.3 OS X

    ffmpegX 0.0.9y
"It can decode MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4 (aka DivX4/5), VOB, ASF, AVI MS-MPEG4 V3 (aka DivX 3), WAV, Real Audio, H263(+) (aka RealVideo 1.0), PGM, YUV, PPM, AC3, PCM8/16 bits, mulaw/Alaw, SUN AU format, MPEG audio layer 2, MPEG audio layer 3, MJPEG. This GUI provides quick transcoding to DivX, MPG1, MP2, MP3 & AC3. You can convert DVD video to DivX, DivX to VCD or XVCD, or DVD to VCD or XVCD." The website also has a growing number of conversion guides. Requires 10.3 with BSD subsystem installed. If you want to use ffmpegX with OSX 10.2, use the last 10.2-compatible version 0.0.9k. OS X

    forty-two v1.6
"forty-two v1.6 is the easiest way to convert a DVD into either an AVI movie , a folder of ready to burn bin/cues for VCDs and SVCDs or a ready to burn .iso DVD disk image on Mac OS X.. It is designed to be simple to use, easy to learn and give quality, in sync results. Please read the easy to follow guide to start converting your DVDs right away.

Version 1.6 brings: DVD Folder processing, Autobitrate calculation for (1 CD) mode, new Multithreading code for improved encoding time and an inline MPG video previewer (requires QuickTime mpeg playback capability). Also, Addresses the bin/cue creation bug."
    Requires minimum 10.2.3 OS X

    MovieGate 2.66
"Encode and create your DVD with chapter support. This app can also encode non QuickTime supported video files (rm, wmv)." The manual is in French. OS X

"MPEG2 Works 4 Advanced can convert input movie file to an MPEG2/MPEG1 DVD/SVCD/VCD ready movie and export MPEG1/MPEG2/VRO/VOB/TiVo/Hitachi VOB and VRO to QuickTime format of your choice." Needs 10.3 or higher. OS X

    iPod video guide
Info drawn from the apple website.

iPod can play the following video formats:

    H.264 video
    up to 1.5 Mbps
    640 x 480, 30 frames per sec.
Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile audio up to 160 kbps
48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

    H.264 video
    up to 768 kbps
    320 x 240, 30 frames per sec.
Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 kbps
48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

    MPEG-4 video
    up to 2.5 Mbps
    640 x 480, 30 frames per sec.
Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 kbps
48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

    This is a touch misleading
The video size is not quite so rigid. "640 x 480" is the total number of pixels which is 307,200 pixels. So a file of 720 x 400 (288,000 pixels) is well within the specs. of a mp4. Looks better on a widescreen too.

The frames per second can be lower, 30 is the maximum so 25 fps is fine for all us PAL people.

Also be careful of the Mbps setting. These are the maximum values, if you use an average bitrate setting of 2.5 Mbps you will excede 2.5 Mbps in areas of high action. Drop it down to 2 Mbps or less for mp4 and 1-1.25 Mbps for H.264.

Hope this helps. May be incorrect, I've pulled some of this from memory and experimentation.

Here is an excellent guide to the specs for the ipod

    Handbrake updated to 0.9

This is a major release. The changes cannot really all be summed up, but here's a try:

    * User experience is improved through a re-envisioned Mac interface and a Windows interface that’s been rebuilt from the ground up.

    * Picture quality is improved through better image scaling, better deinterlacing, new filters for denoising, deblocking, inverse telecine, and new presets devoted to high quality settings.

    * Speed improvements due to updated copies of x264 and ffmpeg. This includes improved multi-threaded encoding for the iPod.

    * Compatibility is improved through new presets for devices like the iPhone and PSP. As well, HandBrake now supports DTS as an audio source and has limited support for .VOB and .TS file containers as input. Most excitingly, HandBrake can now output to the Matroska (MKV) file container.

    * Stability has been improved due to countless bug fixes. (Including audio drop and mp2 issues). Handbrake also has optional support for MP4 files larger than 4 gigabytes.

    Thanks chicken
