The Cubed Maze³ by Phil Pauley adds a third and forth dimension to traditional mazes. It is constructed out of a 100% recycled (laminated) flexible glass based polymer.

Covering nine floors, multiple stairs, glass ramps and transparent walled partitions, this mega maze will challenge and amuse all who attempt her summit.

Each of the nine levels represents the complexity of an equivalent single level maze. Stairs and ramp ways may offer assurance but sometimes you will have to go back down a floor or two to reach the higher levels!

dutch practice kwint architecten has recently completed 'a barn in the countryside', a residence integrated into an existing vernacular structure south of the city of eelde, the netherlands. maintaining the traditional gabled roof form of the drenthe barn, this dwelling maintains the aesthetic of the regional typology without preservation while adding contemporary spatial needs of inhabitants living outside of the city limits. reinterpreting the barn as a home, the exterior is sheathed with a layer of horizontal wooden blinds, allowing air to ventilate into a transitory covered space before entering the interior.

    image

concealed and integrated into the cladding, large barn-style doors may remain closed for privacy or swung open for additional daylight. the appendage ma be positioned perpendicular to the facade to offer framed views of the encompassing fields from the perimeter outdoor rooms and living areas. bordering two sides of the home, a dark wood deck creates a contrasting plinth for the steel framework and light wood of the external shell as well as an outdoor area to receive the southern sun.

  • supervillain lair / fire brigade depot

    image

A rock face is the location of the new volunteer fire brigade of margreid on the wine street. Three big caverns are drilled into the rock and interlinked with a cross cut. A black pigmented concrete wall stands in front of the rock, with the same inclination as the mountain. The three caverns dock on to this concrete wall.

The wall is the main architectural element of the fire brigade and at the same time a protection against down falling stones. Therefore resulted a sensitive handling with the topography and the requirements of use. we chose concrete as the material for the wall: durable, strong and powerful; the dark colour is achieved by the application of beech coal dust and should bear resemblance to burned wood.

Three corpuses penetrate this wall. two garages break through forming portals which are covered with black coated steel. These garages are closed with glass folding gates which allows the red fire engines to be seen from the outside. In the area of the office and administration wing the wall is breaked through by a cantilevered pending glass cube which gives free sight in all directions and brings light into the inside.

The interior of the caverns is characterized by simple materials: wood, glass and steel are used subtly and contrast the cavern with its harsh plastered surface. In terms of sustainability the fire brigade differentiates itself in two points from other projects: the positioning of the building and the overall energy concept. The building could have been placed on a normal lot as most of the houses, but because of the rare grounds in the alpine context the community decided to build the fire station into the rock. Therefore valuable ground has been saved and can be used for agriculture.

The multi-colored glass boxes-within-a-box design not only gives the station a light appearance, as if floating over a bed of stones, but each box serves a purpose as well: two function as emergency stairs, one as office space, and the largest contains the ticket booths, elevator banks, and escalators.

    image

The colors and prints on the glass, apart from looking great, refer to the basic elements of earth, water, fire, and air, adding increasing warmth as one descends to the lower levels (perhaps a nod to the underworld?) The light fixtures and furniture were all designed in the architect’s studio with the idea of mass-production in mind for future stations.

    Island Retreat

An arrangement of freestanding structures around a sheltered central courtyard rests in a saddle above Matiatia Bay. The natural undulations of the saddle have been subtly emphasized to form a natural setting for three roofed structures and freestanding raised pool. Inspiration for the site came from a study of lightweight, canopy- like structures, tensioned to the ground plane. Draped roof planes are tensioned to the surrounding landscape over interior and exterior spaces.

  • must build: eco sustainable

...designed by the architects of Djuric Late in a Paris suburb and is madewith sustainable materials like bamboo. The most interesting part is that the layout was made to harness the natural energy as possible, thus reducing power consumption. The spaces are interconnected to make better use of heating in winter and the top has a terrace where you can have an organic garden.

Metaform Architecture: Building with 4 apartments

    image

In the city of Luxembourg, the agency Metaform Architecture designed this building of 4 apartments. Dark monolith rising on four levels, it is distinguished from surrounding structures, both in its form and its materials.

Located at the head of island, to the intersection of two streets, the facade protects the privacy of its people behind a movable double skin panels made of perforated metal.

  • yeah, hottness!

plus, it's one of those honest looking workmanship builds that makes you think that you could do it yourself.

brb - off to buy some timbers!
  • in fact, i'd probably end up putting a bit more into the joints on that timber structure, to be fair :D

chinese firm people's architecture office has recently concocted the new '21 cake headquarters' for the popular gourmet pastry franchise in beijing. the two-layer light-grey office holds all the rich flavors of vibrant tones inside, topped with a large skylight. white surfaces on the interior act as backdrops for the laminated panes of primary colors, red, blue and yellow. depending on one's position and sequence through the hallway, the overlapping planes visually overlap to create a different combinations of resultant hues spanning the range of the rainbow, illuminated by natural and artificial light. the furniture, also in vanilla tones, are fragments of geometries that can fit into one another as puzzle pieces, allowing for flexibility in reunion space and function.

This established family residence in Power Street Hawthorn had previously undergone renovation with rear additions providing family living, dining and kitchen spaces. These regrettably fell short of providing an agreeable layout and flow for the family, being awkward in configuration, somewhat confined in height and lacking in good natural light. A complete rethink of this space and its relationship to its garden setting was called for. It was agreed the best remedy would be to start afresh whilst generally keeping to the existing envelope so as not to diminish the available garden area and in so doing, provide a more liberating space and focal point for family activity.
  • that ^ "family residence" just goes to show that you can have an awesome and gorgeous home if you just keep trying + throw insane amounts of money at the problem. ;) i did the hand-wave/cool-down thing too.
