so, the time has come. what shall we do?

edited January 2011 in conversations
this place is getting fewer and fewer posts each day. it's time that something was done about it, one way or t'other.

there are very few creative threads where one of us has posted our own work, which is active daily. the threads which do get creative stuff posted to them (from the relevant industry) get nothing in the way of discussion.

there's been talk of a redesign, and a backend upgrade for FL, but i have to ask the question: is it really worth it?

what are your thoughts on the matter, what do you want, what would make it better, why doesn't anyone post?

on the plus side, when there are collab threads, they seem to work out pretty well :)

I love this place and wouldn't want to see the end of it. However, the new user retention rate is shocking. And, I just don't get why the old baseboarders don't frequent this board more.

I've asked the likes of skyler why he doesn't post more and his answer was that hardly anyone ever posts! Heh.

Yeah... i think for me personally it was the Facebook effect - the fact i have a lot of my friends (in my real life) on there is a boone. However it's getting to the point where even i'm getting fed up of it. My wife's almost had enough, and she's deleted the iphone app already.

I love this place, and always will - i use it weekly as a reference tool for links, however it does need new blood who are dedicated to it. I like YH too, but again, i would need to work hard to break into the circle of regulars there, time which i haven't got. I can/will participate more - it's just i'm so busy at work nowadays, i can really only peruse this site at night (when i'm exhausted) - not conducive at all. I could post work from the company i work for, but i know for sure anything i post will be stolen, spread and used elsewhere. It's already happened with my company's site, and legal action is not far away.

The wall thing i kicked off at BB took a tremendous amount of time and patience - time i had, as i was a young father, up at night with my daughter when she needed feeding. I also had monumental patience, some of which i lack nowadays - i can be a short tempered c*nt when i want to be. I have a substantial amount of crap on my plate, therefore posting is limited.

There is one thing i can suggest. Make this site smart-phone aware/compatible, and i/we can post on the move. This site needs to move with us. I'm able to post easily via iPhone and FB and this site needs a facility similar to that.

I read the site daily, many times a day. I just do not contribute as much as I used to anymore.
I would hate to see the place go down. I am all for redesign if someone has the energy to do that. It would be cool to maybe have a gallery type of system where we could post images and videos from the web (our own and others). I do get my daily dose of the web does not get better than this ever from here!

I blame apple for making reliable products and a OS! There use to be a time when we had a healthy tech section :D

Then there's all those people that went and started to multiply and those that gave up spamming ;)

~says keep the place :) but we do need to have a better USP to attract newbies etc...

    (ps. hi mamarose!)

chris, we should show the slightly half-arsed redesign I did
  • edited 6:13PM
Keep it secret, just allude to it now and then to pique interest.

This is kind of what I'm trying to gauge, I think - is it worth putting a bit more effort into, or would that effort be better spent elsewhere?
  • edited 6:13PM
i'll pay you £30 to redesign fl ;)

but on a serious note, having seen and tested multiple evolutions of boards that you've come up with over the years, i'd say an evolution would be good, rather than a ditch and replace :)

Hehe, not that zoom page bollocks mate. Can't a site auto detect a user and switch css styles?
  • edited 6:13PM
Definitely not a ditch and replace, just needs... smarter bolt ons?
  • edited 6:13PM
Just the fact this thread has been posted has piqued my interest. When you say elsewhere, do you have anything in mind?

Show the design idea btw, at least then it becomes a collaboration of ideas if anything at all.

I'm serious about facebook, now that the whole PTA are on there, i can't really 'relax' on there anymore.
  • edited 6:13PM
By 'elsewhere', I really meant on different projects altogether.
  • edited 6:13PM

By bolt on, i meant making site friendlier to mobidevice.

I'd hate to see this place go too and it's hard to quite put a finger on why things have changed. A little increase in interaction can make a big difference to my posting (catch 22).

Though I'm sure FB and twitter have had some impact I'm not sure that's the whole picture, I know some of the patterns in my working life have something to do with it too...

I can relate to that PTA comment, but for me it's colleagues and ex-students of mine who've stalked me onto FB.

How do we get some new blood? And blood that has that same twisted mindset :)

When I sometimes use a #fazyluckers # on Twitter I do it to let people know this place exists and that something (hopefully) good I'm sharing has come from this place. No one else has really picked up on this (and it may never contribute to some new people being curious) but might it be worth us trying?

Someone else has said this thread has shown something of how we feel...

Re-design. I'm not a good enough designer to contribute there but if the cost of hosting ever becomes an issue I'd be happy to contribute and if there are other ways to help...

    Dx

Any photographers here (pro/semi-pro/just-for-laugh-but-good)? I think there are. I'm shit sure of it actually.

I'm only asking because some years a go I got into photography and (unfortunately) left it collecting dust when our first daughter arrived. I just bought myself a 550D and plan to get back into. Seriously into. I need a hobby and I know that FL has always been a place for help/feedback/ideas in terms of design. I'd hate to see FL dissapear because:

    1. A lot of the members here have at least a decade of history together
    2. The amount of knowledge her in design/art/video/film isn't just a minute speckle of dust
    3. Our love for music/design/film connects us

The biggest reason I haven't been around that much more is because I changed the direction of my career. I've been busy fighting my inner demons. Raising kids is fucking great!... but has put a strain on our marriage (working on it at the moment).

Maybe FL just needs a new...ish direction. Maybe a facelift isn't such a bad idea. But like chris wrote: it would only make sense if it was worth the hassle. Having worked many years as a screen designer/graphic designer, a facelift usually came with a new concept/direction.
