playing DVSD codec video (likely in an AVI container) in quicktime

edited July 2010 in advice
just thought i'd put this out there.

i've recently had trouble with some AVIs that had the video encoded with the dvsd codec (you can check this by opening the video, and choosing 'movie inspector' from quicktime 7's window menu (or apple+I).

i found that you likely need to remove the Xvid codec (or the perlan suite of codecs as it's in there, too) from your library/quicktime folder in order for things to work correctly.

    Will it play with VLC?

very likely, but that would have made little difference to me as they are assets to be used in a DVDSP project, and i really wasn't looking forward to converting them all :D
