easiest way to have a group pinpoint events on a (google-)map

edited May 2010 in advice
I am a bit stumped -- I need to set up a simple page that is a crossover of a public calendar and a map: like a public calendar with the events linked to a map of the city I live in -- e.g. you would have "Hansi Hinterseer doing a handstand in front of the St. Steven's Cathedral in Vienna from 13:00 - 13:15, May 11" with the appropriate pin for the event.

Ideally past events should be automagically pruned from the map, and only events in the more immediate future should show (e.g. for the current week only), but that would already be the next step... sounds pretty simple, yet there is a catch -- now, embedding a google map on a page, and manually pin entries from a database appears relatively easy (I skimmed the google maps documentation), but I want to crowdsource the adding and mapping of events -- something which isn't mentioned in the Maps API documentation... so I wonder, is that possible at all? Are there any other online map services which allow for this?

Any of you fazyluckers has any experience with something similar?

    bump.

(i've no real idea, though did use 'umapper' for a project a little while ago - worth checking them out, great help on their forums, too).

[hide]this map, but all i did was use it for some custom markers and shit.[/hide]

thanks Chris, umapper looks promising, I'll check that one out :)

I found this --> http://www.toursprung.com/products/ via google, but toursprung is a paid, self hosted product -- yet they have great implementations in their portfolio like --> http://www.wlanmap.com/punkt/neu which is roughly more or less the kind of collaborative map idea I had in mind.
