Can't Save .avi files with subtitles

edited April 2010 in conversations
I think that at some time in the past I have managed it, as I can find some on my storage drive with therm.

I take an .avi file in the same folder as an .srt file, and VLC automatically puts them together for watching on my computer.

I can use iSubmerge or RoadMovie or iSubtitle to put the subtitles onto the .avi file, but then it's saved only in a .mov (QuickTime) format, which I can watch using VLC or QuickTime, again only on my computer.

I can take that .mov file and using Toast, put several of them onto a disc and burn it so that they can be watched on my living room tv.

If I try to reconvert that .mov file with the subtitles on it, I end up with an .avi file that has stripped those subtitles out!

But no matter what I try, I cannot save an .avi file with the subtitles hard attached, so I can move my storage drive over to the living room DVD player and watch it on my big screen tv.

What am I doing wrong? What can I do right?
