Stripping Subtitles

edited November 2009 in advice
A while back, a friend lent me a multi-volume set of a tv series. Wanting to return them as soon as possible, I ripped and compressed without paying enough attention to the details of what I was doing.

Now I've got all those episodes with subtitles included. They seem to be embedded in the .avi file. I know how I can create a file from the original and determine which, if any subtitles I will have, but is there any way I can now, without access to the original DVDs, strip those subtitles out of the .avi files?

Unfortunately, I think they're pretty much burned into the video track.

That's what I suspected. I've tried converting to a different format, but they remain.

Guess I'll just have to read and listen at the same time. A bit annoying, but at least I've got both, rather than neither!
