F1 2009 Discussion

edited March 2009 in conversations
Just about 2 weeks away from the start of the 09 season. Lots of returning drivers (and not much in the way of switching teams). In fact, I think only 1 rookie in Seb Buemi at STR.

So.... Predictions? Comments? General?

What say ye?

I say: looking fwd to BBC coverage (even though I live in the US.... i have my connections. I mean, why pay for TV when it's free on teh intawebs?!)

A great year ahead for the Brawn team - maybe they will finish 3rd.
    L Ham ( current no 1 ) bad year

Red cars win both drivers and constructors

BBC do a great job on coverage - but why can they not broadcast it in HD

:) i see something like this, and start imagining the drivers pushing the buttons and getting that voice.
"work it" "make it" "do it" "makes us" "harder" "better" "faster" "stonger".

I'll go you one better than that Greg on BrawnGP.... (hate the "gap" in their logo BTW) to say that Jens and Rubino EACH get a win this year.

Alonso brings the drivers' title back to Renault.

    Ferrari retain the constructor's title.

Sadly, McLaren finish about 4th after a tough year, thought Lewis has a win or two.

I'd like to see Renault do well as I was doing some 3D work with them before Christmas. Nice bunch of people...

The way McLaren are currently running I think they would be lucky to get anywhere in the top 10.

No predictions from me, might as well roll a dice - it's too easy to look at test times and make a prediction for the season, but things are never that straight forward.

That said McLarens statements do show that they know they have serious work to do on their aero, but this is nothing we haven't seen in previous seasons, just that the rule changes this year make such a huge impact if you don't get things quite right.

I'm hugely impressed with Brawn so far, but I'll reserve judgement until I see real race performance.

what have brawn done that honda has failed to do? other than an engine change of course
  • edited 9:08PM
It's been the biggest set of rule changes in the last 20 years. Performance comes from those teams that have interpreted the rules, and designed their cars accordingly. It's not necessarily about who had the best cars last year.

honda has been working on this design since 2007. During last season they realized their chances of even scoring points were F'd in the A so they stopped developing for most everything else in 08 and concentrated on this car for 09. They seem to have gotten the aero down.... which i see as Ross knowing this and buying the team to show that it's a good car.

WOW! Major rule changes just today

    http://www.pitpass.com/fes_php/pitpass_news_item.php?fes_art_id=37239

Most notably: Driver who wins the most races wins the championship. I'll put my money on Alonso or Kubica in that case.
  • edited 9:08PM
Interesting :) now winning should be more important than consistency

    Great rule change

Several good things have happened to F1 this year, the best of them is that it will now be shown on the BBC.

Just over a week to go until the first race.

i think it would have been a more compelling race with a different race director of television - otherwise good fun

sorry to hear lot of the brawn guys are facing redundancy, but perhaps a fledgling team getting a 1-2 on their first race a sponsorship deal or two will be in the offing

18th to 3rd is a pretty good showing from little lewis, eh?
  • edited 9:08PM
Excellent showing. And when McClaren sort his car out, he'll be back on that podium no doubt ;)

    wonderful race, wonderful result....

and i rather like the BrawnGP's livery. they stand out from the field with their white, black and yellow attack!

anyone else not understand hamilton's DQ?'
  • edited 9:08PM
    thousands of people.

anyway, this is yet another reason why f1 sucks donkey dick.

The team didn't supply enough information about a radio conversation that happened at the time that Truli re-passed Hamilton (although the FIA had access to this conversation) even though the contents of the conversation doesn't make any difference to what happened on the track,

the conversation went something like this:

Hamilton: I passed truli but he was off the track
Team: if it's under the safety car, you should allow him back through
Hamilton'(slows down): I don't need to it was a legitimate pass, he was off the race track
(Truli retakes Hamilton at this point on the track as Hamilton has slowed right down)

I don't really understand why, whichever way you look at it, either of the drivers needs to lose any points. First they stripped Truli of his, now they have reinstated Truil and stripped Hamilton of his points.
It's almost as if the FIA aren't content unless they have considerably influenced the championship year after year with penalties and fines.

    Indeed

If Hamilton had just kept on going, and Mclarren not been so scared of another heavy handed FIA backlash, he would have gained a legitimate 3rd place.
  • edited 9:08PM
the only thing it looks like and this is as fair as i can be - stewards realised they fucked up docking trulii time and points

make it someone else's fault to cover their ass as if anyone cares noone knows who they are anyway

if they had reinstated trulli in either 3rd ro 4th ... everyone gets on with their lives
  • edited 9:08PM
    yeah, sounds logical.

Why did the stewards not investigate this incident fully, why did they not listen to the radio chatter that they have full access to?
Why did they continue to investigate the matter after Toyota dropped all 'charges'?
  • edited 9:08PM
thing is, mclaren lied to the stewards, after making every possible effort to stay "within the rules" during the radio chatter stuff. i wonder what changed.

More news, Mclarren suspend a top guy, but not lewis and stuff
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7981303.stm

the actual radio broadcast during the race
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/7980602.stm

Did they really expect to get away with not telling the stewards that Hamilton slowed down to let Truli through? I just don't understand what goes through these peoples minds.
  • edited 9:08PM
i don't know why they weren't completely open. unless it seemed like they were pushing for a trulli penalty rather than just a place swap

all we have is the radio chatter the press conference blah and the anti-hamilton's rabidly calling him a liar

they haven't actually said what part of the evidence given to the stewards was untrue
  • edited 9:08PM
the director of racing (david ryan) told hamilton to deny/withold any radio chatter between him and the pits in which they discussed him letting trulli back through. i guess to make it look as though trulli just overtook him. stupid fucks.
  • edited 9:08PM
in all honesty, he would have been far better off not letting trulli back through, as he was passed whilst off the track.

the fia are a bunch of fuckwads. rules need to be simpler - this is pretty much all hamilton has ever done, and he is still unsure of the rules, which says a lot.
  • edited 9:08PM
It's an extension of last year where they Hamilton made a pass on Kimi I think, they asked the race director charlie whiting if the pass was ok, and he said yes, fair pass. After the race the FIA overturned charlies decision and docked Hamilton points - this is what they were afraid of happening again.
Note that this time the race stewards refused to answer Mclarren to say if it was a fair pass or not.
  • edited 9:08PM
crazy race! just wish Jens could get a 'clean' win... not one behind the safety car.

true I know, however it is good for the sport to see other teams doing well.I do hear talk of a female driver coming in. I do hope that this will come to fruition, but I also hear she is a bit of a poster girl. Still it will be good to have someone to make a cuppa.
  • edited 9:08PM
whoa! bold statement there, Mr Greg!

I dont see why dont have female drivers already to be honest and I think the driver you are referring to isnt likely to break through for a few years yet. She's only 16.
