Hard copy portfolios

edited August 2008 in advice
OK, I had planned to use blurb to make some portfolio books.

Guess what? Seems I'm a bit fazy, I should have started earlier but I'd like to take something with me to Singapore in 5 weeks time. I'm not sure that sending stuff to the US and getting it back to Blighty will work in this timescale.

Anybody used a blurb looky-likey in the UK? If so who and were they any good?

    that looks pretty snazzy!

lots of photoplaces do stuff like this, right? i remember someone getting one of the iphoto ones recently, or something.

also, from the blurb site -

Oh yeah, Blurb doesn't allow for control over the kerning the A and V of RAVEN is bugging me at the moment. I might make a graphic of it instead for the final run
  • edited 5:49PM
yeah, it did strike me as a little
    nick ra ven
, i think an image may be the way to go with that.

    looking good :)
one for all, and all for one!
  • edited 5:49PM
    Looks good mate :)

so what spec did you get and how much did it cost etc?
  • edited 5:49PM
20pp, 180mm square. It's perfect bound (which I was surprised at).

One off = £7.95 (excluding delivery). I fixed a few things and ordered 10 last night (10% discount for 10+ copies). Total was 85 quid including super-fast delivery.

    shit, thats cheap !

I wonder if they'd do a fifth colour ie metallic?
  • edited 5:49PM
yeah, fuck me that's cheap for such low numbers, eh.
  • edited 5:49PM
also, no one laughed at my "one for all..." line :'(

    yeah
  • edited 5:49PM
    that's pretty nice, nicko.

:) i have to say that even my uneducated eye skittered at the gap between the A and the V. and usually when one of you points out some subtlety of kerning, i can't see it at all.

Yeah, it was a proof mick so I have fixed that for the actual run

nice 1, I'm gonna try and get one made for the job i was working on which i last mentioned in the work in progress thread. The product range for the brochure is not going to be launched now so i have a full brochure layout including all photography - retouched and ready to print. Only problem is, its not going to print :awkward:

I designed the job around a metallic firth, so i might have to hit the drawing board again and work on a replacement colour / style for it.
  • edited 5:49PM
Squap, you need to read this. As you will not be able to exactly reproduce your design using their software
  • edited 5:49PM
I havent read that as yet but I'm aware that the software limits you. I'm cool with that because my design was based around finish mainly and I dont think it would work unless it was produced the way I wanted.

It just seems a waste to not try and use the shots i designed and directed.

    Nice 1 anyway mate ;)
