APPLE MAIL - hey, where'd my sent go?

apple mail.. V2.1 - OSX 10.4..

sent items go back about three months (early december) then .. nada, nothing, thats all she wrote.. where the heck is the sent items beyond that?

i have mail coming in back as far as august but sent items not the case

are they goneburger? are they archived somewhere?

any ideas?

    I just checked: I have sent mail from 2003 showing up in my mail.app (Version 2.1.1 (752.3) on 10.4.8)

    there are settings int he accounts panel where you determine how long sent mail and deleted mail and junk mail should be kept and whether the should be removed fromt he server

    check this out first and depending on your mail server they may still be there but there aren't mail backups so far as i am aware
