Joomla

edited June 2008 in advice
I've been asked to re vamp a website and add a Content Management System into it.
This is the first time I've been asked to add (CMS) so I've been having a look round
and come across Joomla.

Has anyone had any experience with this and whats your overall verdict ?

cheers anyone?

Haven't tried Joomla in a long time, way before their huge revamp, so anything I could say on it would be unfair.

    I really like WordPress.

WordPress, strictly speaking, isn't a CMS. That said I have and will continue to use it as one.

With a bit of clever programming and the right plugins you can get it to do pretty much anything you like. It is also backed with a healthy and active community of developers so help and updates are never too far away.

I have only dipped my little toe into Joomla so unfortunately I can't really offer too much advice apart from getting the impression that it is more of a CMS out of the box than WordPress.

    (Re WordPress)
...but the same team do Text Pattern http://textpattern.com/ which is definitely a CMS.

I too don't have massive experience here but I have had to (attempt) to hack both and though Joomla is obviously very powerful and a very full CMS, it did also seem to be a sledgehammer to crack a nut, less intuitive to unravel.

Where as with WP, by editing CSS, I was much more quickly able to generate a unique design...

Peak, Textpattern isn't done by the same people, but they are friends. :)

Yeah, WordPress isn't a CMS, but it's not hard to add plugins, edit the templates, and make it do what you want.

Drupal isn't that bad, either, but in all cases I've attempted to use it, it's overkill as well.

Ppff... bordering on incest from what I've read :)

Also, Plone (http://plone.org/) is meant to be the DBs. A friend is having his site built around this at the moment. It's quite server intensive I believe...

for me joomla seems slow and (for most cases) overloaded with functionality. however it's kinda simple to install and within some hours of research you should be able to create your first own template. for clients it's kinda easy to learn how to create new content items or even change navigational bits. keep in mind that they won't be able to create advanced content layouts using the wysiwyg-editors shipped with the system.

the decision which system to use depends pretty much on the functionality you need. i guess there is no perfect ready-made cms as most of them are all built with many purposes in mind.

maybe you want to have a look at those popular and kinda lightweight cm-systems here:
    http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/
    http://www.typolight.org/

to get more information regarding cm-systems and find even more open-source-cms check this url:
    http://www.opensourcecms.com

oh, and don't forget: as joomla is an open source system, you need to apply every security-related update to prevent evil people like skribe from doing twisted things to your server.
