Herb Lubalin was one of the greatest typographers who ever lived. If you've seen the typeface Avant Garde you know his work. He designed many seminal typefaces and was a founder of U&LC and ITC. He was capable of amazing feats of hand lettering at a time when we were seeing it everywhere, but few could bring the elegance to it that he did. While much of his late work is a bit tainted with a dated 70's patina, it still holds up much better than much of the era's.
As a magazine and book designer he was a master at using space and finding clever ways of utilizing type to further the author's words. In the end, that's all we're supposed to be doing, though few designers approach it that way these days.
