wtf? fill stroke/path grayed out

I'm seriously going to break my CS3 dvd into tiny little pieces - i have a path in photoshop - it i should be able to add a stroke to it, but that option is always grayed out in my damn dialog box. wtf?? I read the help menu, and it says to select the path and then under the drop down menu select Stroke Path, but I can't select it. help. please. thank you.

    "Important: When you stroke a path... Make sure the layer you want is active before beginning. You cannot stroke a path when a layer clipping mask or text layer is active."

    Have you tried to select a different layer, then right click on the path in the document window? It should work. Seems silly, but it should work.
