The building at 190 Bowery is a mystery: a graffiti-covered Gilded Age relic, with a beat-up wooden door that looks like it hasn’t been opened since La Guardia was mayor. A few years ago, that described a lot of the neighborhood, but with the Bowery Hotel and the New Museum, the Rogan and John Varvatos boutiques, 190 is now an anomaly, not the norm. Why isn’t some developer turning it into luxury condos?
Because Jay Maisel, the photographer who bought it 42 years ago for $102,000, still lives there, with his wife, Linda Adam Maisel, and daughter, Amanda. It isn’t a decrepit ruin; 190 Bowery is a six-story, 72-room, 35,000-square-foot (depending on how you measure) single-family home.
The Air-Liner range grew out of a simple request by Tait to designer Adam Godrum to create an outdoor sunlounge from metal – a material the company predominantly works in. Currently consisting of the Rec-Liner and Sun-Liner, the range is produced in sheet metal, creating a simple, clean aesthetic.
Architect and designer of Israeli origin and Swedish, Bina Baitel unveils its latest creations to the Next Level Gallery. Working on the skin of the subject, it invites us to explore in this exhibition entitled "Under My Skin" a series of mutant and original lamps as the lamp-rug "Snug".
Display Book Shelf MDF shelf, 6 feet long, 1 foot wide, 3/4 inch thick, resting on two metal brackets displaying books borrowed from Belk Library. The shelf sags under the weight of its contents in a graceful arc, the top edges of all the books are perfectly flush as a result of a conscious selection of volumes chosen to accommodate (or compensate for) the arc of the sagging shelf.
In San Francisco, the studio Jensen Architects has completed the interior design of offices of the agency Kirshenbaum Bond & Communications Partners West. A workspace fun and functional, the walls are blackboards, media creativity and reflection.
We’ve all played this childhood game before: I close my eyes, you run off, hiding in some secret corner and I’ll seek you out. This simple game of hide-and-seek engages us in the eagerness to explore and find, and the thrill of discovery. With these ideas in our mind, we started our design for HIDE&SEEK, a 2 storey fashion boutique in a postwar building in Chinatown by local designer Keith Png.
The lower floor, ‘HIDE’ is a dark, mysterious space, where the haute couture KOOPS label is accommodated. Here surfaces are sleek and black, and individual dresses are shown like exhibits which float in space, each beneath its own line of glowing light.
The upper floor, ‘SEEK’ is the exact opposite of ‘HIDE’, it’s a multi coloured tunnel where each band of colour is occupied by a different local designer label. Here the clothes are hung from wooden planks suspended from the ceiling with manila ropes, much like rudimentary swings. The colour bands envelopes all: floor walls, ceiling and even the windows.
